Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, the answer is yes.

North Carolina GS 20-279 states that all liability policies issued within the state of North Carolina must provide coverage “for the protection of persons insured thereunder who are legally entitled to recover damages from owners or operators of uninsured motor vehicles and hit-and-run motor vehicles because of bodily injury, sickness or disease, including death, resulting therefrom, with limits equal to the highest limits of bodily injury liability coverage for any one vehicle insured under the policy.”

North Carolina law, as with other states, also requires that liability coverage be maintained. The minimum requirements of liability insurance for private passenger vehicles in North Carolina are 30/60/25. These numbers stand for $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage occurring in one accident.
